I had no cheeks. My smile was large and powerful enough to connect the north and south poles. Then it was gone, along with my nose. My eyes sat just above my chin, and my ears screeched upwards as far as visibly possible. I laughed as I touched my nose to make sure it was still there. Oh, how fascinated I was to discover that every bobble I placed on the tree played with my face. I had a large job ahead of me for a five-year old. Three entire boxes of six Christmas bobbles needed to be hung on all the lower branches of the tree!
It took me decades just to finish the first box. Though of course that was because I had to try and steal my mom’s nose away and make her ears reach the ceiling. That never worked though because every time I tried, I ended up losing my own nose. We laughed together for a while and danced to "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer". After all, I had my dancing dress on. It was my lucky dress that I could do anything in. I could run really fast, reach high places and even tie my brother’s velcro shoes with my eyes closed. Later, I made sure that all six red bobbles were placed securely on the lowest branches of the tree so, my mom would give me the next box. The very sight of the bobbles in the second box nearly broke my little heart, for they were gold, not red! The tears which were about to break loose quickly took cover when I soon discovered that the gold bobbles played with my face just as well as the red ones. It was a great way for me to start my day. I was able to help decorate the Christmas tree in my dancing dress with my mom, whom I idolized with a passion only a five-year old understands.
I continued to dance and decorate for quite some time, discovering many cool new looks for my face. The third gold bobble was by far the best because somehow I ended up with only one eye! At first I found it scary, but not as scary as the fourth bobble. I was feeling very indescribably joyful and decided to reach as high up as possible to place a bobble where only the grown-up’s could reach. Standing on my tippy-toes didn’t quite cut it, but that was okay because I had my lucky dress on. So I jumped, and I got it! I also got a branch on my way back down but that didn’t bother me because I didn’t even get a scratch! I just stared proudly at thebobble I managed to place way above my head. A startling three seconds later, the bobble began to grow in size, and before I knew it, the entire tree was laying on top of me! I squinted my eyes in fear as I yelled, "Not me mom, I didn’t do it, It’s not me!" Remembering that I had my lucky dress on, I opened my eyes and through the branches which lay on top of me, I saw only one huge grinning smile; there were no cheeks or nose, and I couldn’t even see any eyes. The smile was so fantastically powerful that it probably did connect the north and south poles.
Its a True Story...written and experienced by Meg.
